Illustrator & Writer
Hey there! I'm Mar, an illustrator based in Chicago, IL. I have a bachelor's degree in illustration and a minor in creative writing, which I use to create characters and artworks with informed and integrated stories. My focus is on character design and character-driven pieces, and I take most of my inspiration from historical fantasy, literature, mythology, and religion. I love to create pieces with a twist on the classical, like a character sheet of Rupunzal with her hair replaced by a golden hijab, or a self written comic putting the nymphs of Greek mythology in a modern city setting.

I'm Mar, an illustrator based in Chicago and an alumni of Columbia College Chicago. I have a bachelor's degree in illustration and a minor in creative writing, which I use to create characters and artworks with informed and integrated stories. My focus is on character design and character-driven pieces, and I take most of my inspiration from historical fantasy, literature, mythology, and religion. I love to create pieces with a twist on the classical, whether that’s a character design of Rupunzal with her hair replaced by a golden hijab, or putting the nymphs of Greek mythology in a modern city setting. When it comes to fan art, I love to do the same thing, often incorporating motifs of stained glass, references to famous paintings, or pieces stylized as tarot cards, all combined with characters from today’s media. My largest goal as an artist and character designer is to make sure that my work is inclusive. Especially as a disabled, trans, queer artist. It’s essential to see myself reflected in the media I consume, and even more important that I allow the underrepresented to see themselves in my art. I consider this with every piece I make, whether it be original or fanart, and use my background in writing to flesh out the reasoning behind the inclusivity I choose to feature in each particular piece.
